Dream Green

Cathleen Stone Island Outward Bound’s Green Ambassador Program offers Boston high school students paid summer employment in the green job sector. It is a youth employment and development program that offers a sequenced, three-year job readiness experience for high-school-aged students in Boston.

Green Ambassadors work for six weeks each summer on Cathleen Stone Island. They gain hands-on experience in natural resource management and environmental conservation, engage in carpentry and citizen science, learn about climate change and environmental justice, and explore career opportunities in the green jobs sector.

Program Goals

Green Ambassadors practice being in community and building relationships with one another. GAs develop teamwork skills such as conflict resolution, group decision-making, speaking up for oneself, and building a plan together. GAs develop intrapersonal skills such as reflection, self-regulation, and perseverance through challenge.

Green Ambassadors engage in place-based education around climate change and environmental stewardship that help GAs gain a deeper understanding of climate change and how it intersects with systemic oppressions.

Green Ambassadors learn technical skills through work projects while also developing relational skills that will prepare them for many varieties of work, continued education, etc.

I always tell people, I’m not good with names, but I remember everyone I met in Green Ambassadors because it was a family. It was just that special. Even when we didn’t agree, we could always find a way to work together. The program really helped me a lot in developing as a person and becoming who I am today.
