Impact & Reports

At Hurricane Island Outward Bound School, transformation begins at the edge of comfort. Through challenge, reflection, and shared purpose, students discover resilience, belonging, and the courage to lead. Our impact extends far beyond the expedition—shaping confident, compassionate people ready to strengthen their communities.

Here is a group of people, likely a team or a group of friends, posing for a photo in front of a rocky cliff. They are all wearing helmets and harnesses, suggesting they are involved in a climbing or rappelling activity. The presence of ropes and other climbing gear further supports this. The group seems to be enjoying their time together.

Leaving Our Mark

Transformation unfolds experientially—while practicing expedition skills in sunshine, rain, starlight, darkness, and fog; while planning the next day or reflecting on the last; when the loads are heavy, and the miles are long; and in the quiet moments of insight that surface long after returning home.

Students leave with greater self-awareness, resilience, and leadership capacity—and a deeper commitment to serve others. Strangers become lifelong friends. Struggles become learning. Success becomes habit.

All our work is grounded in a simple belief: there is more in us than we know.

Our Impact

Learning That Transforms

The wilderness expedition is more than a setting—it is a catalyst. In the backcountry and on the water, everyone’s contribution matters. At times, only your best effort will get the job done. That spirit of inclusiveness and shared responsibility sets Outward Bound apart.

On a HIOBS expedition, participants aren’t passengers—they are crew. This experience builds:

–Resilience in the face of challenge
–Confidence rooted in real accomplishment
–Leadership shaped by service and responsibility
–Connection grounded in shared purpose
–A commitment to contribute beyond the course

Whether students are high schoolers, college participants, or adults, the outcomes are consistent and measurable. They return home more prepared to navigate complexity, collaborate with others, and engage meaningfully in their communities.

Centering Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)

Research tells us that all learning requires a holistic approach across three interconnected domains: Cognitive (memory, planning, attention), Social (teamwork, communication, conflict resolution), and Emotional (empathy, understanding, awareness).

At HIOBS, Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) isn’t an add-on. It is embedded in every expedition.

–When a crew navigates together along Maine’s rocky coast
–When a student leads a route through uncertainty
–When a group reflects on a hard day and finds meaning in it

These are moments where cognitive growth, social development, and emotional awareness intersect. Our programs create the conditions for this integration to flourish—strengthening learning interest, group relationships, and perseverance.

The Domains of Thriving

Outward Bound’s Domains of Thriving (DoT) framework captures the heart of our impact. Developed in partnership with Outward Bound USA, regional schools, and Dr. Gil Noam of Partnerships for Education and Resilience (PEAR), it brings together six decades of experiential learning and research in youth development and resilience.

The framework centers on four essential areas strengthened on every course: Courage, as students step beyond comfort zones and grow through challenge; Belonging, as crews build trust, connection, and shared responsibility; Reflection, as intentional debrief and self-examination deepen learning; and Physical Engagement, as effort and movement strengthen resilience in both mind and body.

The DoT tool allows us to measure these social and emotional outcomes and the conditions that make growth possible—ensuring we continuously refine our programs and expand opportunities for every student to thrive.

Advancing a New Educational Paradigm

Outward Bound is at the center of a fundamental shift in education—one that recognizes that academic success alone is not enough. Students must also develop compassion, adaptability, confidence, and the ability to collaborate.

By teaching and measuring key social and emotional skills, HIOBS helps students:

–Become more engaged learners
–Build stronger, healthier relationships
–Develop perseverance and grit
–Grow into confident, capable leaders

We’re helping students outgrow their comfort zones—and learn to lead, together.

By the Numbers

Each year, HIOBS serves students from across Maine and around the world through:

–Multi-day wilderness expeditions
–School partnerships and scholarship programs
–Educator and professional courses
–Custom leadership experiences

Our annual reports provide detailed insights into participation, scholarship support, program outcomes, and financial stewardship. Together, these reports tell the story of lives changed—and communities strengthened.
