Planned Giving
Create a lasting legacy that keeps challenge, connection, and discovery alive for generations.
We invite you to join the Kurt Hahn Society—a community of visionary supporters who believe in the transformative power of Outward Bound and are committed to sustaining that impact for generations to come.
Named for Outward Bound’s founder, Kurt Hahn, this society honors those who include Hurricane Island Outward Bound in their estate plans. Through a planned gift, you help ensure that people of all ages can discover resilience, compassion, leadership, and connection through challenge.
A legacy gift extends your values into the future. It reflects a belief that challenge builds character and that shared experience shapes lives long after a course ends.
Including HIOBS in your will or estate plan allows you to create a lasting impact while maintaining flexibility during your lifetime. Many planned giving options can also offer potential tax benefits and be tailored to your personal goals.
There are several thoughtful ways to create a legacy gift, including:
Bequests through your will or trust
Beneficiary designations for retirement accounts or life insurance policies
Charitable trusts
IRA charitable rollovers
Each option offers different advantages, and we are happy to help you explore what aligns best with your intentions.

Including a Gift in Your Will
Adding a provision to your will or trust is a simple way to make a legacy gift. After taking care of loved ones, you can designate a percentage of your estate or a specific sum. A bequest may reduce estate tax, and it also gives you flexibility. No other planned gift is as simple to make or as easy to modify as your life circumstances change.
In as little as one sentence, you can complete your gift. Below is an example of wording to help you structure your intention.
“I give to Hurricane Island Outward Bound School of PO Box 800, Camden, ME 04841, Tax ID 04-6089174, or to its successor thereto, ______________ [specific sum or percentage of the estate or description of property]. This gift should be used for _____________ [state general purpose such as operations, endowment or capital needs].”
If you wish to add a gift to HIOBS in your existing will or trust, please contact the attorney who drafted the document and request a simple amendment or addendum.
