Where We Learn

At NYC Outward Bound Schools, we believe that adventurous learning takes place in all spaces — in schools, in classrooms, in communities, and in the outdoors.

In Schools

We support a network of NYC public schools across all five boroughs that are engaged in our school-based coaching work.

Crew

Crew is our signature advisory structure that supports student belonging and connection. Crew is also a mindset that reshapes school culture to be more inclusive, human-centered and empowering.

This partnership pathway helps schools build the conditions for successful Crew implementation and growth.

Instruction for Deeper Learning

Instruction for Deeper Learning is a school-wide approach to teaching and learning where students and educators are empowered to come together to create complex and impactful learning experiences.

This partnership pathway supports educator growth in daily instruction so that students experience a sense of adventure through inquiry, make connections and create original work that matters to them.

Our Compass Rose Schools

We have deep and long-standing partnerships with 14 public schools — our Compass Rose Schools — many of which we helped to open.

Over the years, these schools have served as models of educational excellence and equity. They’ve operated as testing grounds for new approaches and ideas, allowing innovation to take root from within the NYC school system.

Each one of these schools are co-creators in the work we do today around Crew, Instruction for Deeper Learning, Outdoor Adventure and Student Leadership.

In the Outdoors

Our Outdoor Adventure work is delivered through direct programming with students, both in New York City and at our wilderness basecamp upstate.

City Parks

Our Crew Connect takes place in large city parks like Central Park or Prospect Park. This signature community building program encourages students to foster connection and belonging with their peers by taking part in fun activities and collaborating to solve problems.

NYC Outward Bound Schools’ Climbing Wall

In spring and fall, our Crew Climbing program takes place on the back wall of NYC Outward Bound Schools’ headquarters! This 5-story rock wall is the tallest outdoor rock wall in New York City and encourages participants to step out of their comfort zones and develop focus, commitment, tenacity and trust.

Crew Climbing

Brooklyn Boulders

Throughout the year, we also offer Indoor Crew Climbing through a partnership at our local climbing gym, Brooklyn Boulders Queensbridge.

Indoor Crew Climbing

Sharpe Reservation — Fishkill, NY

Our signature overnight Crew Adventure, is a 3 day/2 night program that utilizes the facilities at Sharpe Reservation, our wilderness campsite in Fishkill, NY, about an hour and a half north of the city. Students who participate in Crew Adventure get the opportunity to disconnect from technology and connect with nature — and their peers — through camping, hiking, stargazing, low ropes courses, and more.
