For Students
At NYC Outward Bound Schools, all of the work we do centers the voices, dreams and goals of students. We trust young people to take ownership of their learning and act as agents of change in their communities.
We work directly with NYC public schools students through our Outdoor Adventure programming and by providing leadership experiences through our Youth Development Professional Pathway. Students learn to lead with confidence and curiosity, persist in the face of challenge, and reflect deeply on both successes and failures — fostering the belief that there is more in us than we know.
There is more in us than we know. If we could be made to see it, perhaps, for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less.
Whether on-site at schools, in the city, or in a wilderness-based setting, our Outdoor Adventure programs are designed to help learners realize they can do hard things — more than they ever thought possible — increase their sense of belonging and agency, and help develop skills like collaboration and initiative that transfer to the academic classroom and beyond.
Students want and need to be co-creators of their own learning adventure and growth in environments where their voices are heard and valued. In all spaces where we work, including classrooms and the outdoors, students collaborate deeply with each other and with their communities to build and share their knowledge, develop leadership skills, support one another, and take action to disrupt systems of oppression.
Opportunities for student leadership include our Student Advisory Council and Youth Crew Leadership program.
