Impact & Outcomes

Outward Bound experiences build confidence, connection, and leadership that continue long after the course ends. Participant surveys help us understand and measure that growth.

Gathering Data

Impact data is gathered using the Outward Bound Outcomes Survey (OBOS), which measures self-reported change in key social and emotional skills at the end of an Outward Bound program. The skills in the survey are drawn from the Domains of Thriving SEL framework, for example, students are measured in Perseverance, Assertiveness, Teamwork, etc.

Measuring Social and Emotional Development

Participants complete a retro pre and post survey at the conclusion of their course. They reflect on their skills at the time they started the course compared to the completion of course.

The survey measures 12 key indicators of social and emotional development for young people ages 10-23 and is designed and validated by Partnerships for Education and Resilience (PEAR).
