Service at Outward Bound
A commitment to service is a fundamental pillar of the Outward Bound philosophy. In our view, service goes beyond volunteerism to challenge individuals and groups to look beyond themselves, contribute meaningfully, and strengthen their connection to community and place.
Whether through community projects, conservation efforts, group service days, or experiences connected to our programs, service with Outward Bound is designed to create positive change both for those who serve and for the communities and environments they support.
Service While on Course
Outward Bound expeditions take place in natural settings, offering students meaningful opportunities to give back through environmental stewardship. Participants may engage in trail maintenance, habitat restoration, or litter clean-up, learning the principles of Leave No Trace while making a tangible impact on the places where they learn and travel.
These experiences foster responsibility, care for the environment, and a deeper sense of connection to the natural world.
Service in the Community
Beyond expedition settings, students and POBS alumni also participate in community-based service projects that address local needs. These efforts may include supporting community gardens, improving shared spaces, or partnering with organizations focused on education, health, or social well-being.
The Discovery Center also hosts regular volunteer opportunities that are open to individuals and community members throughout the year.
Group Service Projects
Philadelphia Outward Bound School offers custom service opportunities for groups looking to give back together. We partner with schools, organizations, and community groups to design service projects that address real needs while building teamwork, reflection, and shared purpose.
With program demand at an all-time high, our program spaces and operations rely on service partners to help care for the places, tools, and resources that make Outward Bound experiences possible.
