Where We Learn
We offer programs year-round in metro, near wilderness, and wilderness locations across the North Star State of Minnesota.
We offer programs year-round in metro, near wilderness, and wilderness locations across the North Star State of Minnesota.
At Voyageur, we explore the mighty Mississippi, the Sawtooth range, Canadian border country, prairies, forests and, of course, the very beautiful Boundary Waters.
There’s no place like Homeplace.
Preparing young people to thrive since 1964
Voyageur’s Homeplace wilderness basecamp is a special spot, with a long tradition of youth-centered adventure and transformation. Homeplace is located in the Arrowhead region of northern Minnesota, just west of Lake Superior, near the Canadian border, south of the small but mighty town of Ely. Homeplace sits on the edge of the beautiful Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA)-- the perfect place to launch true wilderness adventure.
With more water than land, the BWCA is a unique and world class federally protected biome, perfectly suited to the region’s original mode of travel– the canoe. Opportunities for adventure abound!
1 million acres to paddle, hike and explore.
Our students share the wilderness with wolves, bear, eagles, owls, lynx, loons, snowshoe hare, beaver and more. This is designated Dark Sky country. No light pollution, no roads, no motorized craft. Just lakes, rivers, rapids, granite islands, and the sound of the wind in the pines. Summer is for canoeing and backpacking, and winter brings snow, ice, magic, skiing and… dogsledding!
Hike through the beautiful Superior National Forest, full of quaking aspen, birch and maple trees.
310 miles overlooking the vastness of Lake Superior.
The Superior Hiking Trail connects Duluth, MN to the U.S.-Canada border along the varied ridges of the Sawtooth Mountains. Cross rivers such as the Gooseberry and Temperance, which cascade over huge rapids on their final descent to Lake Superior, and enjoy a day of climbing on sheer cliffs along the lakeshore or high atop Carlton Peak.
The St. Croix and Namekagon rivers together form the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.
A 200 mile stretch of clean water that glides and rushes towards the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico beyond.
The St. Croix River was one of the original eight rivers to be protected under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968, and the historic significance of the river can be traced back to geologic forces 1.1 billion years ago, with a mid-continent rift and lava flows creating dramatic cliffs and sandstone bluffs that paddlers and climbers are still appreciating today.
Founded in 2011, Voyageur’s Twin Cities Center was purpose-built to bring Outward Bound to metro and suburban schools, colleges, and youth-serving nonprofits.
TCC prepares young people to thrive with inclusive, relevant and compassionate adventure.
TCC specializes in partnership programming, working closely with organizations in Minneapolis, Saint Paul and the surrounding suburbs to design and deliver programs that meet the needs of young people and their learning communities. TCC programming takes place inside of schools, and outside in neighborhood, county and state parks. TCC delivers both school year day programs and summer multi-day learning expeditions on the St Croix River and along the Superior Hiking Trail. Minneapolis and St Paul are two of the greenest cities in America, and we enjoy an abundance of lakes, rivers, streams, woods, prairies and gardens right inside our city limits.
