Most gap years teach skills in classrooms or controlled settings. Outward Bound puts you in situations where communication, leadership, and problem-solving make the difference—when you’re tired, uncertain, and the stakes feel real. Your crew becomes the laboratory. And here’s what our alumni tell us: the hard parts often become the most fun parts. Shared challenge creates inside jokes, unexpected moments of joy, and the kind of laughter that bonds people for life. The skills you practice here transfer because you’ve tested them when it’s hard—and discovered you can enjoy the journey even when it pushes you.

Gap years shouldn’t set you back academically. In partnership with Western Colorado University, many of our semester programs offer transferable college credit. Select courses also provide industry-recognized certifications in wilderness medicine, and outdoor leadership—credentials that strengthen applications and open doors.

The hardest part of gap years isn’t the year itself—it’s the transition afterward. Our Pathfinder curriculum includes explicit goal-setting, values clarification, and action planning. You’ll connect with your family near course-end to discuss your path forward. Many students also maintain contact with instructors post-course as informal mentors during the transition.
