Domains of Thriving

Through challenge and discovery in the outdoors, students develop skills across four interconnected domains. Each domain includes specific social-emotional skills that research shows are essential for thriving in today’s world.

Our approach isn’t about fixing problems—it’s about unlocking potential. Whether students come to us feeling confident or uncertain, outdoorsy or not, they leave with practical skills they can use every day.

The Four Domains

Courage

Catalyzing strengths to take on challenges and risks

Assertiveness: Students learn to share their opinions, make decisions, and take initiative within their crew. They practice speaking up for what they believe in and putting themselves forward with confidence.

Perseverance: When things get tough—whether it’s a steep trail or a group challenge—students learn to keep going. They discover that persistence through obstacles builds both skill and character.

The Four Domains

Belonging

Creating and experiencing inclusion and connection in relationships

Group Relationships: Students build connected, cohesive crews where everyone’s unique contribution matters. They learn that belonging isn’t just about fitting in—it’s about helping others feel included too.

Teamwork: Through shared challenges and successes, students discover the power of working together toward common goals. They practice communication, collaboration, and supporting their crewmates.

The Four Domains

Physical Engagement

Experiencing and expressing oneself through the body and senses

Physical Confidence: Students gain confidence in their physical abilities through outdoor activities that meet them where they are. It’s not about becoming an athlete—it’s about discovering what their body can do.

Self-Regulation: Students learn strategies for managing emotions and stress, especially during challenging moments. They practice calming techniques and learn to recognize their emotional needs.

The Four Domains

Reflection

Examining and questioning one’s actions, roles, relationships, and assumptions

Self-Awareness: Through guided reflection and peer feedback, students gain insight into their own strengths, challenges, and motivations. They connect their behavior to their impact on the group and their communities.

Social Responsibility: Students consider other perspectives and learn to attend to the needs of their crew, their community, and the environment. They practice stepping into different roles and taking accountability.

Conditions for Learning

The Domains of Thriving don’t happen by accident. They’re supported by intentional Conditions for Learning that create the environment where growth can flourish:

The Foundation That Makes It All Possible

Structure: Clear expectations and routines that help students feel secure enough to take risks and try new things.

Progression: Carefully designed experiences that build on each other, allowing students to develop skills gradually and successfully.

Staff & Student Relationships: Caring instructors who model the skills we’re teaching while creating space for peer-to-peer learning and support.

Exploration: Opportunities for students to discover, experiment, and learn from both successes and mistakes in a supportive environment.
