Educational Approach

Young people are increasingly disconnected in a world that demands connection. Through challenge outside, and support in natural settings, we help them develop the skills, mindsets, and confidence to thrive—now and for life. Discover more about our theory of change below.

It Starts Here

From one-day programs close to home to multi-week expeditions in remote wild spaces, Outward Bound meets students in awe-inspiring locations across the country. But by creating the core conditions for learning and thriving, we're able to have a consistent impact on everyone who participates.

Each crew is made up of individuals with unique identities, life experiences, strengths, and goals.

Participants aren't passengers—they're active crew members. Our skilled instructors work alongside them to guide their learning.

Creating a Unique Physical and Social Environment

We bring staff and crew together in settings removed from everyday stressors—often in nature, always intentional. In these unique environments, relationships form quickly. Strangers build connections from scratch. People who already know each other discover new ways of relating as old patterns fall away.

Building Connection

Through Outward Bound, participants become more deeply connected to themselves, to others, and to the natural world.

Skills for Thriving

Outward Bound's approach accelerates social-emotional development across four interconnected domains: Courage to take on challenges, Belonging through meaningful connection, Physical Engagement through movement and awareness, and Reflection on their actions and impact.

A Catalyst for Ongoing Learning & Growth

The skills participants develop extend far beyond the course, becoming tools that they draw on to navigate life's challenges and opportunities—deepening and transforming over time.

Through continued practice and learning, these skills transform into enduring mindsets of

Confidence

Compassion

The connection, skills, and mindsets that Outward Bound alumni carry with them lead to sustained commitments to—

Self.

Others.

The natural world.

The Journey Continues

Every path is different, but Outward Bound remains a lasting source of inspiration. Alumni aren't spectators—they're crew. Empowered to realize their potential, they actively build more connected, resilient communities and shape their futures, together.

CB27 Pull Quotes

I sit here now with the sun, wind, and water in my heart and a renewed sense of confidence, curiosity, patience, strength, and energy. I feel ready to re-enter my life, awakened.

Linnea

HIOBS Alum

I learned the importance of working both hard, and together, creating a safe space for everyone. The physical and mental challenges were great, but it helped me to become a better version of myself. A self that has become more kind, more aware, and more motivated.

Jon

VOBS Alum

I truly have learned to love people and be myself. I may not necessarily know what I want to do, but I know what kind of person I want to be which is more than I could ever ask for.

Where Learning Comes Alive

Why Outside

Natural settings create the conditions for learning that sticks. Whether in a city park or deep wilderness, stepping outside shifts how students engage—they’re more focused, present, and connected to their crew.

In these screen-free environments, students practice real skills with real consequences—navigating trails, solving problems, and leading decisions that matter. The calm, grounded feeling they develop becomes a tool for managing stress, building confidence, and staying connected to what matters most.

Access & Belonging

Access to opportunity. Belonging in every moment.

We remove barriers through scholarships, local programs, and culturally responsive teaching. It’s our responsibility to create the conditions where every student can participate and thrive.

Skills That Serve Them for Life

Social-Emotional Development

Students develop critical social-emotional skills across four domains: Courage, Belonging, Physical Engagement, and Reflection. These aren’t abstract concepts—they’re practiced abilities in communication, collaboration, persistence, and self-awareness.

Expert instructors create structured experiences where students build these skills in real-time. The confidence and connection they gain carries over into classrooms, communities, and lifelong practices of learning and compassion.
