For People Who Believe Learning Can Change the World
This is mission driven work grounded in real impact. You’ll grow your skills, stretch your perspective, and support learning that strengthens communities and creates meaningful change.
Our crew makes student discovery possible
At Outward Bound, your career is more than a job — it’s a chance to change lives, grow as a leader, and be part of a team that’s committed to sparking lifelong growth through challenge – outside.
Where adventure and learning meet
We facilitate adventurous learning, rooted in the outdoors, to unlock confidence, curiosity, and the skills to thrive with purpose. Across the Outward Bound network, our staff are educators, adventurers, and changemakers. Together, we’re building stronger communities and inspiring the next generation of youth empowered to realize their potential.
Our vision is for everyone
Our vision is that our students will rise with courage, lead with compassion, and build more connected, resilient communities. We believe in this vision for our staff, too. Our staff communities — whether remote, in-office, or at our basecamps — are built through teamwork, compassion, and continuous learning. We live what we teach.
We are crew, not passengers
You’ll work alongside an engaged, growth‑minded community, supported by experienced leaders who put staff and student experiences first. We offer fair compensation and benefits that continue to evolve with our people.
One Mission. Many Places to Serve.
A career at Outward Bound can mean joining Outward Bound USA or one of our nine regional schools. Together, we are one national network with a shared mission — but the work happens in many places and roles. Our schools bring programs directly to students, educators, and communities in their regions, while OBUSA supports the broader strength and impact of the network across the country. Wherever you serve, you become part of one crew helping more young people learn, grow, and thrive.
Join the Crew. Shape the Future.
From your first job to a lifetime of leadership, Outward Bound is a place to learn, explore, and build a career that reflects your values. When you join our crew, you become part of a community focused on growth – for our students and our staff. We share success and view challenges as opportunities; this is how we’re building the next chapter of our organization together.
Belonging starts with us.
From the office to the wilderness, we’re here for our crew. We’re here for you. We approach our work with a learning mindset, which requires honoring our differences and welcoming new perspectives. We’re building a staff community that reflects the students we serve and today’s youth contain multitudes. We look forward to meeting you!
Circle Up – We’ve Got Work to Do
Impactful Work
Here at Outward Bound, we have an unwavering commitment to our mission to spark lifelong growth through challenge—outside. We facilitate adventurous learning, rooted in the outdoors, to unlock confidence, curiosity, and the skills to thrive with purpose.
This work is deeply meaningful for both the students we serve and the teams who make it possible. In 2025, 83 percent of our crew agreed that Outward Bound’s mission and vision give their work purpose, shaping a sense of meaning that carries through every season.
Community & Connectivity
At Outward Bound, we are crew, not passengers. Everyone is on the crew, and we all contribute. We share success and view challenges as opportunities.
That mindset shapes how we show up for one another across programs, departments, and seasons. Community is built through shared responsibility, honest communication, and the belief that everyone belongs when everyone participates. You will find teammates who step in, leaders who listen, and a culture that welcomes differences because they make our crews stronger.
We also invest in connection through national resource groups for BIPOC staff, international staff, women, and LGBTQ staff. These communities foster relationships, shared learning, and support, helping ensure everyone feels seen, valued, and part of the crew.
Professional Growth
Growth and learning are central to the work we do. From the start, employees receive training and resources that help them feel prepared and valued in their roles. Across all of our schools, instructors and logistics coordinators receive paid training, reinforcing our commitment to learning as part of the work, not an extra step.
We invest intentionally in leadership development through initiatives like our People Leadership Program, where more than nine in ten participants report increased confidence in their ability to lead. These investments help build thoughtful, effective leaders and create space for people to grow into new responsibilities over time.
To learn more about how we support staff from day one through each season of growth, explore our Employee Journey, which outlines what to expect across onboarding, support, feedback, and development.
Quality Leadership
Strong leadership shows up across every level of our organization, grounded in experience, shared purpose, and commitment to mission. Leaders work together across teams to navigate what’s ahead, creating space for meaningful contributions along the way.
The National Re(crew)nition Awards celebrate leaders who embody Outward Bound’s values in practice, honoring those whose work leaves a lasting mark on our people and programs.
Fair Rewards
We know that careers in the outdoor education industry ask a lot of staff, and we’re working to design benefits to meet the needs of an emerging workforce. Each of our job postings will have wage and benefits transparency so you can make informed decisions.
