College & University Programs

Building the leaders your campus—and the world—needs most.

A group of four people are standing near a canoe on a cloudy day, seemingly preparing for a water activity. They are all wearing life jackets, suggesting a focus on safety. The person in the center is gesturing towards the water, possibly giving instructions or pointing out a direction. The background features a lake and a treeline, indicating a natural setting for their outing.

Cornerstone Experiences for Lifelong Impact

What if the experience that helps students transition successfully to college life could also become their most powerful story of personal discovery? What if that same program strengthened campus culture, increased student engagement, and created the kind of alumni loyalty that drives institutional success for decades?

Outward Bound partners with colleges and universities to create cornerstone experiences that connect students to themselves, their peers, and their potential. Through challenge and discovery in outdoor settings, we help you achieve your most ambitious goals: seamless student transitions, stronger community bonds, and graduates who are prepared to lead with curiosity, confidence, and compassion.

From Challenge to Confidence—On Campus and Beyond.

Students discover what they’re capable of achieving through outdoor challenge and expert facilitation that develops the skills, mindsets, and connections they need to excel in college and beyond. For your institution, these programs create engaged campus communities that drive retention and academic success. For students, they provide tools for continuous growth and the confidence to navigate whatever challenges lie ahead.

The Experience That Changes Everything

We design experiences that meet students where they are—no “outdoorsy” background required. Our instructors create supportive environments where even hesitant participants find their footing, while following rigorous safety protocols every step of the way.

Pre-Orientation Programs

Help incoming students build unbreakable bonds and develop resilience before they face their first midterm. These week-long adventures create the peer networks that drive retention and the foundation for academic success, turning orientation into a launching pad for college achievement.

Student Organization Development

Strengthen leadership within fraternities, sororities, athletic teams, and other campus organizations. Participants develop trust, communication skills, and shared purpose through challenges that reveal character and build deeper connections—creating the engaged student leaders who define positive campus culture.

Faculty & Staff Development

Build collaborative, innovative teams that create exceptional student experiences. Help educators develop the interpersonal skills and shared vision that translate into improved student outcomes, stronger campus culture, and the kind of workplace satisfaction that retains top talent.

Engineering Confidence and Connection

Rose Hulman Institute of Technology

Through an ongoing collaboration with Rose-Hulman’s Noblitt Scholars Program, Voyageur Outward Bound School immerses first-year and sophomore engineers in a Boundary Waters expedition that teaches leadership by doing. Together, students build confidence, establish a sense of belonging early in their college journey, and prepare to thrive both in the classroom and beyond.

Enriching Communities on Campus

Delta Tau Delta Fraternity

In 2025, Outward Bound partnered with Delta Tau Delta Fraternity to offer 45 members from chapters across the country a powerful summer experience. Over four distinct week-long expeditions—including Utah canyon backpacking, Maine coast sailing, Colorado river rafting, and North Carolina backpacking with rock climbing—participants strengthened their bonds of brotherhood while developing leadership skills for thriving back at school. The results demonstrate the program’s impact: 100% of participants reported increased awareness of how to support those around them and felt more connected to their group.

A young woman with a bright smile is captured in an eye-level shot, wearing a blue climbing helmet, a black long-sleeved shirt, and grey pants. She is equipped with a climbing harness and appears to be in an outdoor setting, possibly engaged in a climbing activity. The background features blurred greenery and tents, suggesting a campsite or outdoor adventure location. The focus is sharp on the woman, highlighting her joyful expression and the climbing gear.

I’m so grateful for that [Outward Bound] opportunity because I just felt a lot more comfortable being in a completely new place on my own.

This experience 100% changed me and how I view myself and my abilities. It made me feel more comfortable being uncomfortable and stretched out my comfort zone.

You learn what you’re capable of—physically, mentally, emotionally—and it creates an environment where we can all grow and push each other.

“It was my brothers that stood by me and made this special. Getting to know them and their backgrounds more was what I was excited about the most coming here, but I never expected it to grow into a bond that I will cherish forever. I went through ups and downs literally and figuratively with them. I shared laughs, struggles, hardships, and emotions with them and we grew a stronger bond every single day.
