Sparking growth—and measuring it

Outward Bound experiences spark real growth in students. We measure that change carefully—then use what we learn to make every program stronger.

Increased Confidence

92% of students said – “I have gained confidence to try new things.”

The confidence to try new things opens doors. When students believe in their potential and step into unfamiliar territory, they’re more likely to take on academic challenges, pursue new interests, and rise to meet opportunities. This willingness to try builds momentum—in the classroom, in relationships, and in the choices they make about their futures.

Continued Learning & Growth

93% of students said “I am excited to keep learning about myself and others.”*

Curiosity about ourselves and others is the foundation for meaningful connection and growth. Students who are excited to keep learning approach their relationships, communities, and challenges with openness and compassion. This mindset drives the kind of ongoing discovery that shapes thoughtful leaders and engaged citizens.

Outward Bound Outcomes Survey (OBOS)

Our research method backed by educational science, co-created with Partnerships in Education and Resilience (PEAR).

Domains of Thriving

How it works

The OBOS is a survey students complete at the end of their Outward Bound program.  It includes 9 validated scales that measure change in key Skills for Thriving, plus additional questions about students’ perception of their growth and the quality of their experience.

Skills for Thriving

We measure real-life, transferrable learning across four domains:

Courage: catalyzing strengths to take on challenges and risks
Belonging: giving and experiencing inclusion and connection in relationships
Physical Engagement: experiencing and expressing oneself through the body and its senses
Reflection: examining and questioning one’s actions, roles, relationships, and assumptions

Informing Quality & Staff Practice

We’re committed to using the results of our survey to more deeply understand how our students are being impacted by our curriculum and instructors. This turns into program quality improvements, new training, and staff development that continuously improves what we offer our students.

Co-created with education experts

Built in partnership with PEAR and Dr. Gil Noam, the OBOS is more than just a survey, it’s a tool that tells us what’s working and why, and how we can deliver the highest quality programs to every Outward Bound student.

CB27 Pull Quotes

In our hyper-connected world, where technology often propels us to be perpetually ahead of the curve, I discovered the beauty of slowing down and truly being present. Outward Bound’s mission has not only redefined who I am but also ignited a passion within me to lead with heart and purpose.
